Berlatar belakang 183 tahun sebelum peristiwa yang dicatat dalam trilogi film aslinya, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” mengisahkan nasib keluarga Helm Hammerhand, Raja Rohan yang legendaris. Serangan mendadak oleh Wulf, seorang penguasa Dunlending yang cerdik dan kejam yang ingin membalas dendam atas kematian ayahnya, memaksa Helm dan rakyatnya untuk melakukan pertahanan terakhir yang berani di benteng kuno Hornburg – benteng perkasa yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Helm’s Deep. Mendapati dirinya berada dalam situasi yang semakin terdesak, Héra, putri Helm, harus mengumpulkan tekad untuk memimpin perlawanan melawan musuh yang mematikan yang berniat menghancurkan mereka sepenuhnya.
